Here is another dispatch from my virtual curatorial residency at Diana’s studio. The freedom and aesthetics of cycling seem to revolve around her work. At least two watercolours and four paintings invite us to pedal through city centres and country lanes, even through dreamscapes. Edinburgh’s Cramond beach promenade is not the only favourite artist’s cycling destination in these times of social distancing. Discovering new woodland cycle lanes this weekend, Diana may be on the road leading to new paintings and watercolours featuring her trusty two-wheel friend. Within a century of its invention the bicycle would come to be regarded as ‘the vehicle of novelists and poets’, the writer Maria Popova reminds us in her blog Brain Pickings and I would add the vehicle of choice for artists like Diana. Pedal power equals women power equals art power. Yours, Iliyana Nedkova.
